The Conservative Technology Forum - CTF

The Conservative Technology Forum exists as a platform for those who wish to influence the use and introduction of new technologies in both government and the wider economy and to assist in the preparation of policy for the Conservative membership of the coalition government; helping the Party discuss and debate technology-related issues in Parliament, devolved assemblies and in Town Halls across the UK.

The Conservative Front Bench Teams in Westminster and Europe have a shared objective of stepping up their political initiatives on Information Society issues. Since 2002, a centre-right, policy "think tank”, chaired by Malcolm Harbour MEP and directed by Simon Moores, has been meeting regularly, using expertise contributed by supporters with ICT-related interests. Today however, with the support of Forum President Adam Afriyie MP, The Conservative Technology Forum is now actively contributing to 'Front Bench' thinking and activities.

Information economy and information society issues now play an increasingly important part in plans for the economic success of the United Kingdom and the future of the European Community. The Conservative Party is committed to the support of practical initiatives that will encourage investment and innovation in new technologies to the benefit of our society.

The Forum's primary topics for focus for 2010/11 being:

Superfast Broadband rollout across all of the UK
The role of ICT in delivering cost savings in service delivery
Privacy and surveillance

Cllr David Hopkins (Milton Keynes Council) represents the interests of Conservative local authority elected members on the Board of the CTF and would like to hear from fellow Conservative council members from across the UK who may be interested in becoming involved in the activities of the Forum.

In particular, the CTF is keen to learn from members experiences on how to obtain better value from IT spend and thus deliver ‘a little less for a lot less’ by harnessing the new technologies to do things differently, do different things and persuade government ICT suppliers, as well as central government departments, to ‘get their acts together when dealing with the new public spending realities.
